While an increasing number of educational institutions are closing or reducing their printmaking facilities, the University of Bedfordshire has taken a different approach. In the last few years it has invested in new equipment and has put technical workshops at the heart of its programme. Students undergo a series of workshops in which they learn printmaking skills from basics to more technically refined skills. Taught by active practitioners, the workshops and one-to-one teaching are conceived with the aim of making students aware of the core visual skills needed in developing a professional practice. Students who have specialised in printmaking have gone on to exhibit at national exhibitions such as D&AD New Blood, Handmade and Bound, BITE at the Mall Galleries and Emerge at the London Design Festival.
