Writer Richard Appignanesi and artist and University of Bedfordshire Lecturer Slawa Harasymowicz guide us though the fascinating subject of their latest graphic novel, The Wolf Man. Students in Art and Design got the chance to hear a talk and see work by celebrated, Luton born, Graphic Designer and Typographer  Jonathan Barnbrook this week. Jonathan ran through a number of his projects both commercial and personal highlighting the intellectual depth of his typography work, and the inspiring range of projects he has done in the past like working on record sleeves for famous artists like David Bowie, to more recent work that looks at the murals of Northern Ireland. Lots to think about and get inspired by, thanks Jonathan!

Course Leader for Design for Communication, Noel Douglas features in an exhibition organised by 6 Central St.Martins art students at the Guardian Newspaper’s galleries in Kings Cross, London this April, the show called ‘Our Demonstration’ features work that deals with the ‘art of protest’ and art activism since 1968.

‘Art can create disturbance and protest, and protest can create art’ - Martin Argles, 2012

This exhibition deals with the art of protest, the need for, as well as the effects of art in protest. The exhibition is a culmination of a year of research into the relationship between art and activism with an aim to demonstrate the ways they work to inform one another.

A unique collection of archival images documenting the actions of people in protest spanning from 1968 onwards are exhibited alongside works from both established and emerging artists including Bob & Roberta Smith, kennardphillipps, John Goldschmidt, Noel Douglas, Rowan Durrant, Francesca Tosarelli, James Cauty, Ben Wilson, Jamie Wagg, Robert Greenwood, Leah Borromeo, King Mob, Shepherd Manyika, Cordelia Cembrowicz, Hanging Out Project, Come Cut, Marco Monterzino and Ting-Tong Chang. The artists’ works harness the energy and ideals of individual approaches to protest in art. In today’s current climate, it is necessary to add to the very relevant discussion regarding art in protest and to emphasise art’s potential in actualizing change in the ‘here and now’ of our times.

Graphic design students form the University of Bedfordshire are working on a number of real projects for clients ranging from commercial business’ to the local authority.

Full cinematography DSLR kits are being put through their paces by Photography & Video Art students.  Ben Hodson the demonstrator for the course said “there is a definite convergence of technology and students who can use both still and moving image equipment really set themselves up with the neccessary skills to perform in the creative industries”.

Post graduate student and staff member Ben Hodson has recently had the honour of having an exhibition he curated opened by a member of government.  The exhibition Iraq – The Forgotten Story is touring through the Welsh valleys.
