BA(Hons) Animation
The course places emphasis on developing strong technical, personal and creative approaches from art direction to acting, storytelling and sound. It prepares students for work in short and feature length production, advertising, pop-promos and the video games industry, as well as postgraduate study across a range of art subjects.
Animation is an intensive, mainly studio-based, practice. Drawing is an essential skill underpinning the learning of all forms of animation. Students are trained to reach proficient standards of drawing during the course through a range of exercises including life drawing, location drawing, visual research and storyboarding. This knowledge is then applied using digital animation techniques including software from MAYA Entertainment Suite and Adobe Creative Suite.
Students have the opportunity to explore a diverse range of skills through lens, printmaking and digital workshops. Animators also collaborate with students from other subjects, including Illustration, Interior Architecture and Interior Design, and Music Technology. This enables them to develop innovative applications for their work, alongside more traditional specialist skills.
Art and film theory underpin personal development in both independent and commercial animation practice, with students working on a range of individual and group projects across year groups. The course has a strong studio culture and alumni community. Professional practice is also supported through CV and portfolio-showreel development, as well as mock portfolio interviews by visiting industry professionals.
